Bear
Trail 2006-2007
Den
4 - Pack 220
Please
have your scout bring his Bear book and den dues of $.25 to all meetings and
turn it in to Larissa so that she may sign off and record achievements each
meeting as they are completed. Place a note inside the book marking any
achievements completed at home so that this information can be recorded easily
and credit given for that achievement. If your scout misses a meeting, please
check with Laura to see what achievements he may have missed so that this can
be made up. It is the responsibility of the scout and his parent to make up the
missed achievement.
Please
refer to pages 24 and 25 of the Bear book for information on the Bear
Trail. To complete the Bear Trail each
scout must complete twelve achievements. He must complete one from the GOD
section, three from the COUNTRY section, four from the FAMILY section and four
from the SELF section. Most of these requirements will be met by participating
in the den meetings and the pack meetings. However, some do need to be done
with the scout and his family. The number beside the achievement indicates one
that will be completed for rank. Please work on any achievements that are
marked "Home" at home. The Bear book is very easy to read and follow.
Please read through the Parent Guide starting on page 6. The following is a
list of all the achievements and where they should be completed. Remember, we do not have to do all of the
achievements but any completed after the 12 required will be awarded as arrow
points.

ARROW POINTS
- Work on these
at home unless otherwise indicated by the den leader. We will do some of these
in den meetings after we reach rank.
Each requirement within the Electives is considered one arrow point. We
will do the Weather Elective (#2) and the Nature Crafts
Elective (#12) as a part of the World Conservation Award
(see page 259 in the Bear Book). Some of these will be done at home. We need to
complete this award before the boys move on to Webelos. Also, any Achievements
not used toward rank will be counted as arrow points.
Suggestions for
Achievements and
"Go
See Its"
These are some suggestions for planning the
den meetings. The things listed as achievements are the ones we need to
accomplish before the end of March so that we can get our Bear Badges at the
March pack meeting. After March we will be working on mostly electives and
having more fun! Use the Program Helps as a guide for the flow of the meetings
and for activities, games and crafts. You do not have to follow the Themes in
the Program Helps. There are millions of
activities, skits, games and ideas on the web at www.usscouts.org. Use
this reference!
November
Cub Scout Shipbuilders
During one meeting we could "Go and
See It" to the Alabaster Police Station. This would accomplish Achievement
7 maybe the Officers could fingerprint the boys. If not we can do it ourselves. Do all of Achievement 3. Ach. a, b, f, h, i, & j can be done
at the meeting and d we can do at Tannehill.
Assign e to be done at home and brought to meeting. Possibly do the Ride Right (Achievement 14)
at the Tannehill Campout. If not, that
will be done in February. Write thank
you note to the Naturalist for talking to them at Oak Mountain. Let your son be
the denner for the meeting (Achievement 24b). Assign homework of achievement 9a, c, & f
to bring to December meeting.
December Cub Scout Stars
We will have only 1 meeting this month due
to school being out. Have the boys bake
cookies with their parents (9a) to bring to meeting (9b). Discuss 9d at meeting. Discuss achievement 11, Be Ready. We can buy the boys knives as Christmas
presents to give them at this meeting. Assign homework of writing the Knife Safety rules (in the Bear
book) to bring to Januarys meeting.
Plan games or activities or crafts to fill time. Let your son be the denner
for the meeting (Achievement 24b).
January Poles Apart
Do achievement 19. Boys will have their knives and whittling
chips. At the 2nd meeting, do
achievement 20 and make a toolbox. Plan activities or games.
Let your son be the denner for the meetings
(Achievement 24b).
February Aloha Cub
Scouts
At
the 1st meeting we will do achievement 22. Plan other activities or games related to
ach. The second meeting will be to tie
up any loose ends before getting rank in March.
Let your son be the denner for the meeting.
March
BALOO Skies
At the 1st
meeting, work on Elective 2 Weather for World Conservation Badge Award. Talk about the requirements at this meeting
and then build whatever needs building. Have
the boys track required weather stuff and bring findings back at the 2nd
meeting. Do games or activities related
to weather. This is the theme for March
in the Program Helps. At the 2nd
meeting we will discuss findings and maybe take a trip to the National Weather
Service in Calera.
April Cub Cafι
Work on Elective 12 Nature Crafts for the
WCB for both meetings this month. Look
for activities or games that relate to the theme of Nature Crafts.
May Cubs & Bugs
Galore
We will probably have only 1 meeting this
month. Vote in April what the boys would
like to do in the May meeting. Parents
can get together and come up with several suggestions to present to the boys
for a vote.
June Wheel into Summer
Cub Day Camp at Oak Mountain June 23 - 27.
This is a HUGE opportunity for the boys to earn Activity Pins for Webelos and beltloops. They
usually teach pins that are difficult to teach unless you are skilled in the
area (Engineer, Scientist, Geologist, etc.)
Plus it is a lot of fun! It would
be great if our entire den went this year!
July Rockets Red Glare
Dont forget about the summertime pack
activities.
August A Century of
Scouting
We need to begin our journey to
Webelos. We can start off the cub year
with a trip to the YMCA to earn our Aquanaut Activity pin.
