A Scouting Ministry to Youth
GENERAL INFORMATION
Cub Scout Pack 220 was founded in 1972 and is chartered by Westwood Baptist Church, Alabaster, Alabama and has a tradition of providing a quality Cub Scouting program. Pack 220 is in the
Shelby District (www.ShelbyDistrict.org)
of the
Greater Alabama Council (www.1BSA.org).
We have approximately 115 registered Cub Scouts and 40 registered leaders.
Our most important thing in Pack 220 is to HAVE FUN! The Pack and Den activities are based on a monthly district theme. The Cubmaster and Committee Chair will conduct planning meetings for the upcoming year during the summer months. This doesn’t mean the Pack activities are set in stone. Many Pack activities are planned on an ongoing basis and this is why parents are encouraged to attend the monthly Committee meetings. Parents will be informed by their Den leader, Den Committee member and via the
Pack calendar,
displayed on the Pack website, as to upcoming events.
Our program will flourish with parental support or wither away without it. Scouting is, almost uniquely, a family organization. We currently register about 40 new boys and 10 new adults each year from several churches and schools. If you are interested in our program, we welcome you whatever your faith or ethnic background.
We encourage each parent and their Scout to join in on the fun, adventure, and the experience of Cub Scouting!!!
The following paragraphs cover Pack Information, Dues, and Registration Information. Please read this information carefully and contact any
staff member
if you have any questions.
Typical Hours
- Pack Meetings – generally held the last Monday of each month at
Westwood Baptist Church
and normally run from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. The Pack also has several special events that take place throughout the year; details for these events are on the
Pack calendar.
- Den Meetings – generally held 2-3 times a month for a total of 3 hours a month with days, times and locations determined by the Den leader. You will receive a calendar including Den meetings and times from the Den leader.
- Committee Meetings and Den Leaders Meetings – held monthly for all Committee members and Den leaders, generally on the 2nd Thursday of each month at
Westwood Baptist Church
from 7:00pm – 8:30 pm. The meeting is open to all leaders and parents.
-
District Roundtable Meetings – held by the Boy Scout District for all Den Leaders, Assistant Den Leaders, and Committee Members at 6:50pm on the 1st Thursday of each month at
Riverchase Church of Christ
on Hwy 31, in Pelham.
Parental Support (very important!)
Leaders and volunteers are required for a Pack or Den to function. Occasionally, parents will be asked to sign up to support various activities. The key is, the more volunteers we have, the less any one person will need to do. Volunteers will be necessary because the leadership cannot do everything! Lack of parental involvement will result in subsequent cancellation of activities and/or meetings.
Den Formation
Our Pack is made up of Dens, which consist of 2 leaders (Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader) and should be no less than 6 boys. Dens will meet three hours a month (2-3 meetings) and generally the Dens do not conduct a Den meeting the week of the monthly Pack Meeting. Den meetings usually last about 1-1 1/2 hours. The Den leader will decide the day, time and place of the Den meeting. Field trips are optional and typically occur once a month in accordance with the monthly activity. The Dens will be formed by grade level:
|
1st Grade |
|
Tigers |
|
2nd Grade |
|
Wolfs |
|
3rd Grade |
|
Bears |
|
4th Grade |
|
1st Yr. Webelos |
|
5th Grade |
|
2nd Yr. Webelos |
Parent participation is required at all Den meetings. Siblings are not permitted without the Den leader’s permission.
Uniforms
A neat, complete “official” [commonly called Class A] uniform is REQUIRED for most Pack activities and all Pack Meetings. This fosters a sense of pride and belonging in the boys. The “official” uniform consists of:
-
A clean Cub Scout shirt with proper
insignia patches.
-
An official Cub Scout neckerchief with slide.
-
Dark solid color pants or shorts (blue jeans are acceptable).
-
Cub Scout belt.
-
Cub Scout Pack 220 hat.
The uniform is to be supplied at the parent’s expense, as well as the proper Cub Scout handbook. All rank awards, arrow points, sports and academic belt loops and pins, etc. will be provided by the Pack. The uniform is to be worn for all Scout-sponsored activities. Pack 220 T-shirt (commonly called Class B) may be worn to Den meetings per the Den Leader’s discretion and selected outdoor Pack activities. For any Den or Pack meeting that is a field trip or go-see-it “official” Cub Scout uniforms are to be worn.
Pack T-shirt, Pack hat, and Pack unit number patches are all available for purchase from the Pack. We will make these available for purchase at most Pack events. Other uniform parts are available for purchase at the
Scout Shop
located at 516 Liberty Parkway, Birmingham, AL, (205) 967-5954.
Behavior
Boys are expected to behave properly and respectfully at Den and Pack meetings. A boy disobeying Den rules will be sent home at the discretion of the Den leader. If this happens 3 times in a 3 month period, the problem will be taken before the Cubmaster and/or Committee Chair. If the problem cannot be resolved, a special meeting of the Pack Committee will be called.
Committee Leadership
The Pack Committee is the governing body of the Pack. Every Den is to have a minimum of 1 Committee member; the Committee member should be another parent from the Den other than the Den Leader or Assistant Den Leader. Committee members are requested to attend a one-day seminar (Cub Leader Basic Training)
for their respective rank within 12 months of joining the Pack and also complete a 1 ½ hour Youth Protection Training within 6 months of joining the Pack. All Committee members need to attend the monthly Pack Committee meetings. If unable to attend a Committee meeting the Committee member is to: a) secure a replacement (another parent from the Den) b) inform the Committee Chair who will be at the meeting in their place. Items brought before the Committee for vote shall be by majority, each registered Committee member present casting one vote. Uniforms for Committee members are encouraged but completely optional.
Den Leadership
Every Den must have 2-deep leadership (Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader). Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders are required to complete Fast Start Training within 3 months of joining the Pack. They must also complete a one-day seminar (New Leader Essentials and Cub Basic Leader Training)
for their respective rank within 12 months of joining the Pack and also complete
a 1 ½ hour
Youth Protection Training
within 6 months of joining the Pack. All Den leaders and Assistant Den leaders are required to attend the monthly Pack Den Leaders meeting. They must also obtain a uniform and must be present at activities as required.
Pack Meetings
All Dens meet together in a Pack Meeting held monthly from September through May generally held at
Westwood Baptist Church
beginning at 7pm on Monday evenings. The most current calendar is maintained on the Pack website. We attempt to limit Pack meetings to 1 hour, however the actual place and time depends on the activities planned for that meeting. Transportation to and from all Pack activities are the sole responsibility of the parent(s). Parents are required to attend the Pack meetings.
We ask that as guests of the church – parents please control your children and escort them to and from the bathroom. Also there is to be no running, food or beverages in the church.
Program Feedback
All members and adults are welcome to provide suggestions for changes in operation of the Pack, meetings, or activities to any leader. A current
staff roster
is available here.
Any suggestions would be welcomed in order to enhance the Scouting experience for all. Any one is welcome to attend the Committee meetings. Please remember we are all volunteers.
Registration and Pack Fees
Boy Registration
For a new Scout to be properly registered, he must do the following:
- Complete the
Cub Scout Application
and turn it in to the Pack Cubmaster or his representative. Make sure all medical information is filled out on back of the form. This information is kept on file for all Pack and Den activities.
- Complete the
Statement of Understanding and Web Site Consent
form and turn in to the Pack Cubmaster or his representative. This form is kept on file and needs to be updated if there are any changes.
-
Have parent(s) complete the
Parent Talent Survey
and turn in to the Pack Cubmaster or his representative. This form will give the Pack leadership ideas by which to help all of our Scouts learn and mature. This form may be duplicated if parents know of others who would be interested in teaching Scouting skills.
-
Pay national registration and Boy’s Life fees (approximately $22.00). If a boy has an unexpired membership with another unit, he will not pay initial registration or Boy’s Life fees. Instead, he will complete a Unit Transfer form and pay a transfer fee of $1.00, and his membership will be transferred to Pack 220.
- Pay Pack Fees. A copy of the
current year's approved Pack budget
is available here. Each Scout has a choice of paying the Pack fee or participating in the annual Pack popcorn fundraiser held from the middle of August through the middle of October each year. The proceeds from the popcorn fundraiser are applied toward this Pack fee. See the
approved budget
for details.
Adult Registration
If one or both parents wish to be registered as leaders (Den Leader, Assistant Den Leader, or Committee Member) they must do the following:
Adult Registration Fee ($10.00) is paid for by the Pack. The Pack will only pay for (1) Den Leader, (1) Assistant Den Leader and (1) Committee Member per Den. If your Den has more than (1) Assistant Den Leader then the Den or the individual must pay the fee.
Pack Treasury
Prior approval must be obtained from the Pack treasurer and Committee Chair for any expenditures / reimbursements from the Pack treasury. For reimbursements you mush have a receipt. For money in the Den Accounts, the Den Leader is the only one authorized to request disbursements from the account. If the treasurer wishes, he/she may seek counsel with the Pack Committee. Any non-approved expenditures will be considered a donation to the Pack (keep accurate records for tax purposes). Only those persons designated by the Pack Committee are authorized to sign checks on the Pack account. A monthly report of the Pack’s financial status, including account balance and itemized income and expenses, will be presented at each Committee meeting by the Pack treasurer.
